What’s the difference between a Geek and a Nerd?

Inquiring minds want to know. I always thought they were interchangeable negative terms.

There were interchangeable at one time. Geek seems to be considered less insulting. Geeks are considered intelligent but also obsessive about non-mainstream, non-"cool" subjects. Geek can also be used as a verb as in, "I'm still geeking out about meeting William Shatner."

Nerd not only implies brainy but also unfashionable and socially inept.

I consider myself a geek about some things, but I do not consider myself a nerd.

Um, you're a geek, Chowder...but too attractive to be a nerd in my book. (I'm not making time, HellCat, so don't scratch my eyes out! I'm just saying you have a handsome husband.) Jay's a geek, too (He's an information techology specialist.) but he's no nerd.

Nerds are also tiny sour candies.

p.s. Everyone you had dinner with last night is a geek except maybe HellCat...I don't know her well enough to say. Maybe she has latent geek tendencies.

They're interchangeable.

Though, I've embraced both my inner geek and inner nerd.

And yes. We're all geeks/nerds. :)

Osquer & PW: Thanks. I've been confused about this for some time. I always thought the 2 terms were interchangeable.

I'm going to try to not cringe when I'm referred to as a geek. Many bad memories from school days. There are still scars even though it's been decades.
